Zanthorrea Nursery was established in 1975 by the late Jean Hooper, son Alec and wife Jackie.
Jean grew plants as a cottage industry in Gooseberry Hill to meet the needs of her busy Garden Design business. Back in 1975, Australian native plants were difficult to source for Jean’s designs and Jean was a newly qualified Horticulturist with skills in propagation.
Alec was a carpenter by trade, and well suited to building the infrastructure of the nursery. Jackie was a full time teacher but helped out on weekends.
The property was purchased early 1975, and by September we opened the doors to our first customers. None of us had business experience, but loved our product and understood that for our fledgling nursery to survive we needed to supply a quality product, offer accurate advice and provide an enthusiastic and friendly welcome.
The drought years of 1977 to 1979 created an opportunity for us, and trade blossomed. From family only, we soon had a happy team to share the tasks.
After 42 years in business, our philosophy remains the same, but perhaps our priorities have changed. We realise that the most important aspect of our business is our people. The team work together to create a pleasant experience for customers and ensure our product is presented in an attractive setting.
Son Ross joined the team at Zanthorrea having started learning horticulture in 2001 and he is now a certified nursery professional and as passionate as ever about bringing quaity native plants to the Garden Centre. In 2008 he won the Nursery and Garden Industry of WA’s Young Leader of the Year award and is an active member of the Nursery and Garden Industry Board. In 2015 Ross purchased Zanthorrea from Jackie and Alec to continue on this 3rd generation family garden centre.
