Chinese restaurant chains in the USA are growing popular since start of the twentieth century, which was when they first arrived in America. In the early years there was no take-out culture and Chinese immigrants found employment in American cities. They then opened restaurants that provided delivery and take-away meals.

These establishments soon became very popular and American people began to recognize the distinctive flavor of Chinese food. Nowadays, you can find Chinese restaurants across the country and you can find nearly every part of China represented in one of them.

The first revival of Chinese food within China in the United States occurred during the 1960s, especially in the cities that had huge Chinese population. In 1967, an initial four-star Chinese restaurant opened at New York. Then, San Francisco opened the doors to several similar eateries. It was the United States also began to draw skilled Chinese chefs that helped to increase the number of Chinese restaurants. In the 1970s, there were less than four thousand of these establishments, and it was common to see them on menus.

In the twentieth century, the number of Chinese establishments in the USA nearly quadrupled. The influx of Chinese immigrants from China altered the characteristics of American cities and Chinese restaurants started to pop up outside of Chinatown. When immigration laws were liberalized in 1965, Chinese immigrants started to increase from a tiny group of immigrants to a larger and more diverse population. This led to an increase in the number of Chinese restaurants across the United States.

In the United States, there were more than 5,000 Chinese establishments in the USA doubled between 1910 and 1920, and then doubled over the next ten years. In the city of New York alone generated $177.9 million of revenue in 1920, a staggering figure in today’s economy. The Chinese laundries were the largest employers for Chinese workers in the 1930s, but by then, restaurants were the top employers. The rapid growth of restaurants occurred despite the challenges in obtaining merchant status, because it was the case that the U.S. had arbitrary requirements for merchants in restaurants.

There are more than 45,000 Chinese restaurants in China in the United States, it is not possible to list every one of them.
